ABOUT VLABER (VLADIMIRAS BERESNIOVAS)
Vladimiras Beresniovas, internationally known by his artistic name Vlaber, is one of Lithuania’s most beloved and influential cartoonists, illustrators, and visual humorists. Born on December 13, 1948, in Boronki, Mogilev region (then Soviet Belarus), he overcame extraordinary hardship early in life. Orphaned at age thirteen, he traveled alone across the Soviet Union before finding his home—and artistic identity—in Kaunas, Lithuania.
In Lithuania, he mastered the language, graduated from the Kaunas School of Applied Arts, and submitted his first cartoons to a local newspaper, which published them immediately. This marked the beginning of a remarkable five‑decade career in which Vlaber became a central figure in Lithuanian visual culture.
Vlaber has illustrated more than 200 books, published weekly cartoons for decades, and helped define Lithuania’s tradition of warm, humanistic, philosophical humor. His drawings—simple in line but rich in meaning—have become part of Lithuania’s cultural identity. His work has been displayed in exhibitions across more than 20 countries, including Greece, Bulgaria, Germany, Japan, the United States, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
From 1989 to 1996, he served as Art Editor of the satirical newspaper Ūpas, an important platform during Lithuania’s transition from Soviet rule to independence. His style is recognized for its gentle irony, emotional intelligence, humanistic warmth, and a poetic simplicity that resonates across age groups and cultures.
Writer Juozas Kundrotas described him best: Vlaber does not wait for inspiration—he works relentlessly, from morning until late into the night, supported always by his muse, his wife Birutė. Together they have celebrated more than 55 years of marriage and raised two children, Beata and Rokas.
Today, Vlaber stands as one of Lithuania’s cultural ambassadors. His cartoons and illustrations continue to inspire new generations and remain a living part of Lithuania’s artistic story.
